A baby was born on a Dutch airline KLM plane that was flying between Ecuador and the Netherlands. A spokesperson for the company said Saturday evening that medical professionals assisted the mother during the delivery. “Mom and baby are fine”said the spokesperson.
The carrier might not provide further details out of concern for privacy. A hospital in Haarlem in the Netherlands, however, communicated on its website that a mother and her baby born on a plane had been welcomed. The mother, Tamara, was en route from Ecuador to Spain, with a stopover at Dutch airport Schipol, according to the hospital.
Two doctors on board
“A few hours before landing in the Netherlands, she had abdominal pain and decided to go to the bathroom. To her surprise, following two contractions, she had her baby in hand: a son, Maximiliano. Tamara had no idea she was pregnant and was quite upset by the event,” continues the account provided by the hospital.
According to the healthcare infrastructure, there were two doctors and a nurse from Austria on board, who were able to assist the mother following this delivery. The baby’s name was chosen in reference to one of these people.
The mother and child, following landing at Schiphol, were taken by ambulance to this hospital. “Both Tamara and Maximiliano were fortunately in good health”, confirme l’hôpital Spaarne Gasthuis. “The maternity team did everything they might to ensure that both received the appropriate care and were accompanied for the administrative procedures. As soon as they can, Tamara and Maximiliano can continue their journey to Madrid.”
