The Pan American Health Organization (PAHO) will deliver and install 40 mechanical ventilators for pregnant women with health problems due to their condition and 23 oxygen concentrators donated by the Swiss Embassy in 32 hospitals in 18 states of Venezuela, reported Wednesday the organism.

PAHO explained in a statement that these kits will be distributed in health centers under a schedule established by the Ministry of Health.

“These will contribute to the reduction of maternal and neonatal deaths throughout the territory, and are being delivered and installed following a training process for their correct use,” he said.

PAHO indicated that these workshops include training for the management of critical mothers and newborns, as well as the “safe” treatment of incomplete abortions and Immediate Post-Obstetric Post-Event Contraception (Aipe).

The Venezuelan State has not reported the infant mortality rate since 2013, although in 2016 it published statistics on this matter that showed that 30% more boys and girls died before their first year and 64% more women died during pregnancy or within 42 days following delivery in 2016 compared to 2015.

The United Nations Children’s Fund (Unicef) said at the time that these figures were “clear evidence” of the country’s health crisis.
