Kabul ∙ The Taliban government in Afghanistan publicly executed the accused in the murder case. A Taliban spokesman responded that it was the first public execution since taking over power in Afghanistan last year. In 2017, the suspect in the case of stabbing a man to death in Western Farah province was publicly executed. Spokesman Zabihullah Mujahid informed that high-ranking Taliban had also arrived to witness the execution of the sentence.
Interior Minister Sirajuddin Haqqani, Deputy Prime Minister Abdul Ghani Baradar, Chief Justice, Foreign Minister and Education Minister witnessed the execution of the sentence. Three courts investigated the case. Meanwhile, the Taliban did not comment on how the young man’s punishment was carried out.
Afghanistan’s Supreme Court has ordered that men and women can be punished publicly for crimes such as adultery and theft. Due to this, the methods of punishment that existed during the Taliban regime of the nineties were reintroduced in the country. Last month, a UN spokesman called on the Taliban to end public executions.
