Miles Davis and Milt Jackson: “Miles Davis and the Modern Jazz Giants” (1955)

January 1, 2023 marks the 100th anniversary of Milt Jackson’s birthday. The American vibraphonist, who died in 1999, is best known for his membership in the Modern Jazz Quartet. However, Jackson has also recorded two interesting albums with trumpeter Miles Davis.
One of them is the 1955 recording “Miles Davis and the Modern Jazz Giants” released by Prestige Records. Alongside Jackson, Davis joins pianist Thelonious Monk, bassist Percy Heath and drummer Kenny Clarke. The (alleged) quarrel between Monk and Davis, who did not want to be accompanied by the pianist during his solos, is legendary in the course of the recording. But it is precisely the friction between different musical characters that can lead to extraordinary results. In this regard, the version of “The Man I Love” is particularly worth mentioning.
In any case, the elegantly swinging Milt Jackson and Miles Davis harmonized so well that they recorded another album in the same year, but this time with pianist Ray Bryant.
