Germany: Porcelain in train bar cars
The German railway company has decided to use reusable material for drinking and eating on its trains. And this from January 1st.
Passengers of the German railway company Deutsche Bahn will be able, from January 1, to drink a coffee bought on board the trains or to eat their meal in porcelain or glass dishes, for more “sustainability”, announced Tuesday the ‘operator. “From January 1, 2023, customers will be able to choose high-quality china and glass as an option for their bar car food and beverages,” the company said in a statement.
Objective: to reduce waste by replacing disposable plastic or cardboard tableware. “Reusable” glasses, plates or bowls will be “free, without deposit, and available on demand for all orders” in mainline trains, detailed the public rail operator.
“Deutsche Bahn is accelerating its ecological transition”
Deutsche Bahn is in tune with the new regulations coming into force on January 1 in Germany. It obliges restaurants, bistros and cafes to offer their take-out products in reusable packaging. Single-use packaging will not be prohibited, but a reusable variant must be offered, without a price increase. “Deutsche Bahn is accelerating its ecological transition in on-board catering,” said Michael Peterson, director of passenger transport for the company, quoted in a press release.
Since March, the carrier has already offered “50% vegetarian or vegan dishes”, as well as “100% organic products”. More generally, Deutsche Bahn, the largest energy consumer in Germany, has set itself the goal of becoming “carbon neutral” by 2040. Currently, 62% of the rail traffic operated by the company is done thanks to to renewable energy, according to a spokesperson.
