The West must avoid creating a new Cold War by dividing the world into blocs, writes German Chancellor Olaf Scholz in an opinion piece published today in Foreign Affairs magazine.

Scholz emphasizes that “tall efforts” to build new partnerships and points to China and Russia as two countries that represent a threat to a multipolar world, while advocating the need to strengthen European and transatlantic unity.

“Periods of relative peace and prosperity in human history, such as those experienced by most of the world in the early post-Cold War era, need not be rare parentheses or mere deviations from a historical norm in which that brute force dictates the rules”, writes the chancellor, for whom “the world is facing a Zeitenwende (turning point, NDR), a tectonic change of time”.
