15 percent less gas used

The Viennese save on heating, according to current figures from Wiener Netze. In the last two months, 15 percent less gas has been used than in the previous year. But it’s time to keep saving.

Minus 17 percent in October, minus 13 percent in November: This is how much gas has been saved in Viennese households so far, Christian Call from Wiener Netze told Radio Wien: “We can see a clear savings trend in Vienna. On the one hand, Vienna has grown once more. That means there are more households that use gas for heating. But there was a saving anyway. And part of the savings is probably also due to the fact that gas was substituted for district heating.”

Save for next winter

But there is no reason to celebrate. Despite the currently almost full gas storage, it is important to continue saving, according to the regulatory authority E-Control. Otherwise there is a risk of a gas bottleneck next winter: “But with the falling temperatures, energy consumption is now increasing. The gas storage facilities are currently almost full – at 95 percent. Nevertheless, the gas should continue to be used sparingly,” says Johannes Mayer from the regulatory authority E-Control.

You have to come out of this winter with as full stores as possible. Mayer named around 50 to 60 percent of the storage capacity as the target value. On the other hand, it would be difficult to replenish the stores in the summer. As far as the gas price for this winter is concerned, Mayer estimated that it should level off at the current price of currently 130 to 140 euros per megawatt hour.
