Why AirPods Max have worse noise cancellation

Apple recently updated the AirPods Max. New firmware has changed the effectiveness of active noise reduction. Here’s why.

Many users of the Cupertino company’s headphones have noticed a drop in the effectiveness of noise reduction. And they are right. The E47 firmware slightly modifies the noise reduction.

Indeed, the active noise reduction system blocks “a little less noise between the mid bass and the high bass”. As a result, users will hear more such noises when wearing the headphones.

The consequence of a patent complaint

Apple would have made this decision following a complaint filed by Jawbone Innovations, a “patent troll”. The complaint mentions the use of technology that relies on a vibration sensor to determine when a user is speaking.

The data recorded by the sensor is used to cancel background noise. According to the same complaint, Apple uses similar technology on HomePods, AirPods and iPhones. A modification to come in the next updates?
