several cases detected since the beginning of November in Strasbourg

While the Covid is reappearing in France with its ninth wave, and hospitals remain on alert in the face of epidemics of influenza and bronchiolitis, Strasbourg is experiencing several invasive meningococcal infections (IIM), otherwise known as meningitis. Since November, at least 4 young adults have been infected in the inner city. We take stock.

The news fell this Wednesday, November 30 around noon: the Grand Est Regional Health Agency (ARS) issued a press release reporting several reports of meningitis in Strasbourg and its agglomeration.

At least 4 cases of meningitis detected in Strasbourg

After rigorous epidemiological investigations, ARS Grand Est discovered that 4 cases of IIM frequented bars and clubs located in the hyper-center of Strasbourg. Among them, we find in particular the Live Club, located 1 rue du Miroir, mentioned in the press release.

ARS Grand Est specifies that people who have been in contact at risk have been identified and treated as a preventive measure. It still invites all those who regularly attend the festive places of the hyper-center since November 18, and in particular the Live Club, to monitor the symptoms suggestive of the disease and, in case of doubt, to call 15 in emergency.

Symptoms of meningitis

The ARS also recalls the various symptoms of meningitis to watch out for:

  • severe headaches (headaches), sensitivity to light (photophobia);
  • neck stiffness, body aches and fatigue;
  • fever ;
  • red or purple subcutaneous spots (purpura) on the body;
  • severe abdominal pain and nausea and/or vomiting.

Two symptoms should particularly alert: a poorly tolerated high fever and/or one or more rapidly appearing red or purplish spots. If this is your case, do not hesitate and call 115 immediately.

After Covid or dengue fever, Strasbourg is now facing several reported cases of meningitis. The ARS has raised the awareness of health professionals in the Strasbourg conurbation and remains on the lookout for any other additional measures to be taken. In the meantime, take care of yourself.
