(CNN) — US President Joe Biden praised, on Tuesday, the US team’s victory over its Iranian counterpart, 1-0, in a match that was held on the grounds of Al-Thumama Stadium, at the end of the group stage, of the Qatar 2022 World Cup finals.
Biden said in a quick speech to the audience for his speech in Bay City, Michigan: “The United States .. the United States .. what a match .. they did it .. when I spoke to the coach and the players, I told them you can do it, and they did it, God loves them, I thought you might want to listen.”
Through his Twitter account, the US President re-tweeted a previous tweet that he had published with his wife, First Lady Jill Biden, before the match, in which he expressed their confidence in the victory of the US team, and Biden commented on the tweet by saying: “They did it.”
The American team defeated Iran, 1-0, in a match that was held on the grounds of Al-Thumama Stadium.
Christian Pulisic scored the only goal for the US national team, at the 38th minute of the match.
The American team imposed its control over the course of events, and created a number of chances, until it succeeded in scoring before the end of the first half, while the Iranian team tried to adjust in the second half, but it was unable to do so, as its attempts were less dangerous than the attacks of its opponent.
And the American national team won the qualifying card for the second round, as runner-up to the second group, with 5 points, behind the leaders of the English team, while the Iranian national team’s balance was frozen at 3 points, in third place.
The North American team set up a date with the Dutch national team, the leaders of Group A, in the round of 16 in the World Cup and in its 22nd edition.
Carlos Queiroz, coach of the Iranian national team, commented on his team’s defeat once morest the US national team, saying, “The dream has ended.”
Queiroz added following the final whistle: “The first half was for the United States and the second half for Iran, and the difference is that we did not score in the second half as we should have, but the dream ended, and now, it is time to think regarding the next step for Iran.”
“I’m really sorry on behalf of our players that we didn’t get our chance to qualify for the next round,” Iranian midfielder Saeed Ezzatullah said following the loss. “Life and football will go on, and that can be a good lesson for us, at least for For young players like me in the future, so I hope our fans and people in Iran will forgive us, and I feel sorry, that’s all.”
