Mauro Caviezel gave everyone chills at the Lake Louise super-G. The Grison, who was making his return to racing in Canada, fell at high speed and hit his head hard.
At the start of the Super-G with number 8 and following his elimination in the downhill the day before, Caviezel showed pretty things and a place in the top 15 seemed attainable. But following a minute of racing, he crashed out of the reck at around 120 km/h. Grison collapsed and lost consciousness. His head then hit the snow hard.
Mauro Caviezel then remained immobile for a long time on the track next to the safety net before the first rescuers joined him. About ten minutes later, television cameras showed the skier with twelve World Cup podiums standing, but his face clearly scarred by the fall.
Caviezel was evacuated from the crash site by helicopter before being taken to Canmore Hospital with a suspected concussion and for further examinations.
