In St. Gallen, the animal park Peter und Paul has too many wild boars. He must kill some of them. Their meat is served in the restaurant next door. This is also the case with some deer.

The animal park Peter und Paul in St. Gallen is facing a problem: it has ten wild boars too many. Only two of them might be entrusted to another park. The other eight had to be shot. Their meat will be served in the restaurant located next to the park.

“We can’t always give away all the animals alive. Of course, the goal is always to prevent the animals from dying. But it would be utopian to think that we can always place all the animals in other establishments”, explains Regula Signer, park warden, to «FM1Today».

“Boars are slaughtered here and a butcher then cuts them up,” she continues. The animal park Peter und Paul cooperates with the restaurant of the same name. “Some of the meat is sold in the restaurant located right next to the park. For us, this is the best and most sustainable solution”, adds Regula Signer. If the origin of the meat is not noted on the card, the information will not be hidden if a customer asks the question.

In addition to wild boars, the park is also home to deer, marmots, forest cats and ibexes. And deer suffer the same fate as wild boar. “In autumn, we have to take the males before they reach sexual maturity. Otherwise they would impale each other with their antlers during the rut period, ”reveals the guardian.

Despite everything, the park does not want to give up the young animals. “For animals, raising young is a huge occupation. This is extremely important and should not be underestimated. That’s why we let the animals do their thing,” concludes Regula Signer.
