Earlier in the week, we introduced you the list favorite books of the French, in which one might find several sleeves, proof that Japanese comics are becoming more and more popular within popular culture. And among the mangakas present in the list, we found in particular Eiichiro Odathe famous Creator of One Piece. And precisely, the latter recently spoke regarding the possible attraction between two leading members of The Straw Hat Crewto know Luffy et Nami.
a bad influence?
Considered a classic of the genre, the manga One Piece made its debut in 1997 in the Weekly Shonen Jumpand will be entitled to its anime adaptation from 1999. Due to its longevity and popularity, Oda’s work has become the best-selling manga in the world., but also the best-selling series in the world drawn by a single author. The manga had notably passed a historic milestone few months ago, holding the new record for copies printed and sold worldwide.
One Piece tells us the adventures of Monkey D. Luffy as he aspires to become the next Pirate King by getting your hands on the ultimate treasure, known as One Piece. Apart from his unusual appetite and his fiery and jovial attitude, Luffy has the distinction of having a body with the properties of rubber, following he inadvertently ate a devil fruit, the Gum-Gum Fruit (ou Gomu Gomu no Mi en VO).
To realize his dream, Luffy will then gather a crew of pirates, and thus set off to explore the Grand Line. And following rallying Zoro to his cause, the second person to have joined the Straw Hat crew is none other than Nami, aka “The Thieving Cat”. And while the two characters have known each other for a long time, some fans wonder what the true nature of their relationship is, especially since certain events were somewhat disturbing.
That is why as reported JapanFM, Oda opened up regarding how Luffy reacted when he saw his navigator’s naked body a few times., a point that obviously marked many fans. In the SBS Vol. 54, the mangaka would then have answered this:
Wow, I got a lot of questions regarding this. Is that what you pay attention to? Don’t just read manga all day, go study some more! OK ? Well, I say that, but I’m just drawing manga. I noticed that when we were drawing it, but if Luffy had had a nosebleed seeing Hancock’s body, I think you all would have said, “Ehh!?”. This is not the Luffy we know. I believe Luffy reacted to Nami’s naked body twice, in volumes 18 and 23, and both times it happened, Usopp was with him! He is the suspect! In other words, when Luffy is alone, his reaction is the same as with Hancock. He is interested, but he is not bewitched by her. But when he’s with Usopp, who is the same age, it’s like a kid on a school trip: his bad side comes out! Yes, both sides of Luffy seem fair to me, so the culprit is definitely Usopp!
Indeed, some fans had highlighted the differences in the reactions of the protagonist following he saw the naked bodies of Nami and Empress Boa Hancock, aka the Serpent Princess and member of the 7 Grand Corsairs (or Shichibukai in VO) . But it seems that Luffy is not so much attracted to Nami as he is mostly influenced by Usopp.who joined the crew right following Nami.
But while Oda had revealed this summer that his manga would end around 2025it is possible that the mangaka will reveal more to us on this subject by the end of his work, surely reserving many surprises for the readers.
