The E40 motorway towards Brussels will be closed at Erpe-Mere from Friday evening to Monday morning due to the demolition of a bridge over the railway line, the Flemish Roads and Traffic Agency said on Thursday, which provides traffic jams.
“From Friday evening 8:00 p.m., the number of lanes on the E40 will be gradually reduced until a complete closure from 10:00 p.m.”, specifies the agency. “Then we will start preparing for demolition. Infrabel will first de-energize the overhead cables of the railway line, then lay them on the ground. Regarding the bridge, the road surface, guardrails and noise barriers will be removed. The actual demolition will begin at 10 a.m. Saturday morning and will last until Sunday morning. Then, we will begin the evacuation of the debris and the clearing of the tracks. During this time, a temporary bridge, which motorists heading for Ghent will be able to take from November 28, will be erected on the other side of the E40. ”
“Transit traffic on the E40 motorway towards Brussels will be via the E17 towards Antwerp and via the N16 or the R0 and the A12/E19 towards Brussels from the Zwijnaarde exit”, adds the Agency. “The accesses to the E40 via Merelbeke, Wetteren and Erpe-Mere in the direction of Brussels will be closed and local traffic in the direction of Brussels will be diverted via the N9 and the Siesegemlaan (R41) towards Aalst”.
