Argentine goalkeeper Emiliano Martinez said his fellow players should treat this match as “their first World Cup final”.
The omen is certainly in Argentina’s favor – they have beaten Mexico in their last 10 meetings dating back to the 2004 Copa América, and won all three previous World Cup matches once morest them at the 1930, 2006 and 2010 World Cups.
But with doubts regarding progress, Martinez realizes there can be no room for complacency.
“We are in a lot of pain from our first and most important defeat in the World Cup,” he said.
“We expected to play as if it was a final, but we didn’t. After we scored the first goal, we calmed down a bit and paid the price for it. On Saturday it will be our first World Cup final.”
Historically, Argentina has the advantage here. Starting with their first match in the 1930 World Cup, Argentina had a record of 14 wins over Mexico in 20 matches. Mexico, on the other hand, has only two wins under its belt once morest La Albiceleste.
The last time the two teams met was during a friendly match in September 2019 when Argentina won 4-0. Specifically, Lautaro Martinez scored a hat-trick in the first half of the match.
