The decision, announced on the website of Opgroeien – literally “to grow up”, the Flemish counterpart of the Birth and Childhood Office (ONE) – was taken on Wednesday and confirmed to the Belga agency on Thursday by an agency spokesperson. It applies with immediate effect, he added, without specifying the name of the nursery concerned.
The measure would aim for a structure that can take care of a maximum of eight children simultaneously. The license was suspended due to a “urgent necessity” and follows “to a situation of serious danger reported very recently”, Opgroeien worrying regarding the physical and psychological integrity of the children welcomed in this place.
The employer would have suspended his maternal assistant at the beginning of the week and the parents were informed of this at the end of last week.
Opgroeien also supports parents in their search for temporary alternative childcare. This license suspension follows several other similar decisions. For several months, Flanders has been shaken by cases of abuse in nurseries.
Last Friday, the agency’s general administrator, Katrien Verhegge, resigned, with immediate effect.
