AL RAYYAN, Qatar — The United States frustrated England until they drew 0-0 on Friday in the nations’ second match at the World Cup of soccer.
The result may not match the famous 1-0 victory for the United States in the 1950 tournament, but it is still the most recent occasion in which the Americans have defied the odds once morest the English.

England crushed Iran 6-2 in their opener in Qatar, which vindicated their status as one of the tournament favorites. The English, however, might have left this clash once morest the United States with a defeat.

“It wasn’t our best performance, definitely,” Kane said. We had some good times with the ball, but we didn’t quite get our finished product. The shutout put us in a good position in the group. »
England knew a win would guarantee them a place in the knockout stage, but the draw still leaves them atop Group B with four points. The United States are third with two points and will need to defeat Iran on Tuesday to advance to the next round.
