North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO) Secretary General Jens Stoltenberg said the Atlantic alliance would react to any attack or aggressive posture once morest Sweden or Finland.
This is what emerges from a press conference held this Friday in Brussels, before the next meeting of NATO foreign ministers, scheduled for November 29 and 30, in the Romanian capital Bucharest.
Stoltenberg pointed out that the parliaments of 28 NATO member states have ratified the membership of the two countries (Sweden and Finland), pending ratification by the parliaments of Türkiye and Hungary.
The NATO Secretary General expressed confidence that the two countries would ratify the membership of Sweden and Finland, calling for the completion of the ratification process as soon as possible.
Stoltenberg said he discussed the issue when he met with Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan earlier this month in Istanbul.
According to Stoltenberg, Sweden and Finland had fulfilled their obligations, as stipulated in the tripartite memorandum concluded with Türkiye.
He said Sweden had strengthened the anti-terrorism law and lifted restrictions on arms exports to Türkiye, noting that Sweden and Finland had pledged long-term cooperation with Ankara to fight terrorism.
Stoltenberg also pointed out that the two countries’ membership in NATO will increase its power, and that some countries, including the United States and the United Kingdom, have provided security guarantees to Sweden and Finland.
According to the Secretary General of NATO, the two countries participate in all the military and civilian activities of the organization, and that “it is inconceivable that NATO remains without reaction in the event of an attack or of an aggressive posture Sweden or Finland”.
