Some men question the effect of prostatectomy on sexual health, fearing that removing it will make it difficult for them to have sex and have children.

Can a man have children following a prostatectomy?
In this regard, Dr. Salah Ramadan, a consultant urologist, confirmed that prostatectomy for cancer treatment negatively affects men’s sexual health, to the extent that it may lead to infertility.

Ramadan explained that the sexual health of men following prostatectomy is affected in two ways, namely:

1- The lack of an erection of the penis
When the prostate is removed, the surgeon may have to remove the nerve cells surrounding it, which threatens the man following surgery with erectile dysfunction or non-occurrence at all.

2- Sperm reflux
One of the vital functions the prostate gland is responsible for is the production of fluids that nourish the sperm and transport it outside the body, from the opening of the penis through the ejaculation process.
Therefore, a man following prostatectomy may face difficulty in ejaculation, which leads to reflux of sperm.

According to the Cancer Research UK website, a man will not be able to father children through normal sexual intercourse following a prostatectomy.

The reason is that during a prostatectomy, the surgeon removes glands called seminal vesicles, which makes semen unable to pass through the tubes and exit the body.
That is why andrologists call the orgasm felt by men who have had their prostate removed dry orgasms or retrograde ejaculation.
