Argentina protests visit of British princess to Malvinas

The Argentine Foreign Ministry strongly repudiated the recent activities of Princess Ana of the British Royal House in the territory of the Malvinas Islands, which together with the South Georgia and South Sandwich Islands, form part of the archipelago over which the South American country claims sovereignty and faced both nations in a war that ended 40 years ago.

Precisely the 40th anniversary of the end of the conflict is the argument of the British Royal House for the presence of Ana, daughter of the late Elizabeth II, in that territory since November 18. The sister of the current monarch of the United Kingdom, Carlos III, arrived in the territory to the south of the Atlantic, accompanied by her husband, Vice Admiral, Sir Tim Laurence.

«The Argentine Foreign Ministry rejects the deployment of official activities of Princess Anne of the British Royal House, in the Malvinas Islands, because it has been carried out in exercise of the illegal British occupation of the Malvinas Islands, Georgia of the South, South Sandwich and the surrounding maritime areas’, points to a press release of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the South American nation.

In the text issued by the Argentine Government, Casa Rosada “once once more calls on the United Kingdom to resume sovereignty negotiations in compliance with resolution 2065 and other resolutions of the General Assembly and its Special Committee on Decolonization.”

“It is time for the United Kingdom to comply with the mandate of the international community and put an end to the anachronistic colonial situation in those archipelagos, which are an integral part of the Argentine Republic,” the bulletin explains.

It is worth noting that on July 5, Argentina sent a protest note to the Government of the United Kingdom rejecting the designation of the South Georgia and South Sandwich Islands as “specially protected areas” by that country and noted that these territories insulares, along with the Malvinas Islands, are part of their sovereignty claim.

Since 1994, the Argentine Constitution ratifies the claim over the territory dispossessed by the United Kingdom

Another important aspect is that, in a reform in force since 1994, the National Constitution of Argentina expresses in its First Transitory Provision that “the Argentine Nation ratifies its legitimate and imprescriptible sovereignty over the Malvinas, South Georgia and South Sandwich Islands and the spaces corresponding maritime and insular zones, as they are an integral part of the national territory”.

And it adds that “the recovery of said territories and the full exercise of sovereignty, respecting the way of life of its inhabitants and in accordance with the principles of International Law, constitute a permanent and inalienable objective of the Argentine people.”

Anne’s visit was announced by the British Royal House on the royal family’s Twitter account, indicating that it was the first visit by the recently crowned monarch’s sister since 2009.

Also with the text “take a look at the visit of the Princess Royal to the Malvinas Islands”, the monarchy’s tweet referred to the visit, repudiated by Argentina, of the princess to the territory claimed by the South American country. Subsequent posts detailed Ana’s other activities on the islands.
