Traffic accidents in Niger killed 1,158 in 2021 (Official) – Agence Afrique

Niger, which ranks seventh within ECOWAS in terms of traffic accidents, with a rate of 26.2 deaths per 100,000 inhabitants, is one of the States most affected by this phenomenon and says it is determined to continue its national struggle once morest this evil.

“7,543 bodily accidents, 1,158 dead, 4,011 seriously injured, 8,071 slightly injured”: these are the official figures communicated by Alma Oumarou, Minister of Transport, on the occasion of the celebration of African Road Safety Day 2022.

Alarming statistics that remain silent on the number of lifelong disabled people and the enormous material damage caused by these traffic dramas.

In Niger, the largest country in West Africa, the economic losses linked to these accidents have been evaluated “at 237 billion CFA francs per year (371 million dollars)”, according to ECOWAS.

According to the World Health Organization, Africa tops the charts in the ranking of traffic accidents in the world in terms of victims, with an average rate of 26.6 deaths per 100,000 inhabitants. Niger’s executive has set itself the goal of reducing accidents on its territory by 25% by 2025.
