(CNN) — At least eight people died when the plane they were traveling in crashed into a house in Medellín, Colombia, this Monday, the official account of the Olaya Herrera Airport reported on Twitter.
The six passengers and two crew members on board the plane “were reported dead,” the airport said, citing emergency teams at the scene of the accident. “We regret the loss of the crew of flight HK5121 from San Germán.” said the airport.
In addition, seven houses were destroyed by the accident, which occurred shortly following takeoff, according to the mayor of Medellín, Daniel Quintero.
Quintero reported that the Piper twin-engine plane suffered “engine failure.” “Unfortunately, the pilot was unable to keep the plane airborne,” the official added.
The twin-engine aircraft took off from the Olaya Herrera airport moments before crashing in a residential area of the city.

The airport also indicated that a group of experts from the Civil Aeronautics is investigating the causes of the accident. The plane covered the route from Medellín to Pizarro, in the department of Chocó.
