Inspector Bijoy in Vikram, part of the Lokesh Kanagaraj cinematic universe, Naren is currently in the busiest days of his film career following two decades. The actor, who has played roles loved by the Malayalam audience including Murali in Classmates, is once once more active in Malayalam cinema. Zach Harris-starrer Invisibility hits theaters on Friday. Naren speaks:
A meticulous script
Adarshiam is a thriller film. This is the first time that a film is made in two languages. Thriller is a genre that can be equally successful in both languages. A lot of people who watch thrillers know the suspense by the halfway mark. But the invisible has a different care. The movie tells the story of five or six people. There is mystery in the film from the beginning. Without leaving it to people’s guesswork, the track will alternate. It holds until the end. The strong point of the movie is the meticulous screenplay. It is a movie that should be enjoyed in the theatre.
An invisible beginning
Usually move to other languages only following you have a market in one place. However, acting in Malayalam and Tamil films at the same time caused some backlash. Classmates was a huge success. Later I was not in Kerala. He was doing a Tamil film. People here thought that I am not doing Malayalam films and am interested in Tamil. Even so, opportunities are missed. Films were made in Tamil like Otayan Pattalam. There were also setbacks. There were also problems in the release of films.
After 2010 a new generation came in Malayalam cinema with directors and actors. They also started making films as a team. I didn’t get a chance to film with them. I am not part of the new generation teams. Not getting good movies is also the reason for the decrease in movies in Malayalam. Film with new team. Its beginning is invisible. This is also the first film with Joju and Sharafuddin. Jude has played the lead role in Antony’s 2018. I want to continue to be active in Malayalam.
Mishkin has his methods
Enjoyed doing the film with Mishk. Everything, including his hand, was well influenced by the way the film was made. There are not many people who take cinema so seriously and are so passionate regarding it like Mishkin. We were good friends. Through this partnership, he was able to be a part of films in various genres. His methods may not be acceptable to everyone. But I did it. Once you understand Musk’s filmmaking techniques, it’s easy to make films with him.
Lokesh Cinematic Universe
Lokesh was able to act in Kanakaraj’s films because he was a part of Tamil cinema for some time. We both are Kamal Haasan fans. For me, the role in Vikram was a dream come true. He wanted to act with Kamal Haasan so much. Lokesh’s role as a police officer in Kaidi was inspired by Mishkin’s role in ‘Anjathe’, which I did. Karthi said that he had seen me in his mind while writing the film.
I did the same character of Inspector Bijoy in Kaidi in Vikram. I am very happy that all the discussions regarding Lokesh Cinematic Universe (LCU) started from that character. Lokesh’s upcoming film Vijay is also a part of LCU. But I am not in it. After that comes Kaidi 2. I am a part of it. Kaidi 2 is gearing up on a big screen. Such a cinematic universe is the first time in Indian cinema. It was possible only because of Lokesh’s excellence.
