An incident occurred at the swimming pool of the Rixensart sports complex this Friday evening. A rescue device had been dispatched to the scene following chlorine poisoning.
Children who were doing their swimming lessons were coughed up when they got out of the water. Worried, the adults present on the spot contacted the emergency services. Reinforcements were called in to take care of the young people. Access to the swimming pool was therefore closed this Friday evening.
“I was informed of the incident by the head of the police zone and immediately went to the scene. Several children had obviously been victims of discomfort”, explains the first mayor of Rixensart, Sylvie Van den Eynde Cayphas.
For an as yet undetermined reason, eight children showed signs of poisoning. Paramedics took care of four of them. Two were taken to the Saint-Pierre clinic in Ottignies, one to the Braine-l’Alleud hospital and the last to the Delta hospital in Brussels.
“The other four children went directly home with their parents. On Friday, around midnight, those who were taken to the hospital were also able to reach their homes,” Precise Sylvie Van den Eynde Cayphas.
As of Friday evening, a team from Veolia, responsible for maintaining the swimming pool, was dispatched to the scene to measure various parameters of the water and the ambient air. “Nothing has been brought to light, no anomaly has been detected. The technicians are returning to the site this Saturday morning to carry out a new battery of tests. While awaiting the results and as a precaution, we have decided to close the swimming pool until Monday”concludes the alderman from Rixensart.
