The Wallonia Picardy emergency services were alerted on Friday evening, around 8:30 p.m., that a traffic accident had occurred along the chaussée de Lille in the village of Marquain, in the entity of Tournai.
A SMUR, an ambulance, an extrication vehicle, a truck to mark the scene and a command vehicle were dispatched to the scene. The services of Ores also intervened. For a reason that the investigation will have to try to determine, a driver lost control of his car which ended its race once morest a public lighting pole.
“The car struck laterally, on the passenger side, this electricity pole. The driver, who was alone on board and the only one involved, was extricated. The victim was taken care of by the emergency doctors and transferred to the emergency department of the Center Union du ChWapi in Tournai,” explains Lieutenant Gil Van Houck, who led the intervention. The car that was driven by the victim is registered in Belgium. Since the shock was lateral, it is not known for the moment whether the motorist was heading towards Tournai or towards the near French border.
