The NEOS have been in the Vienna city government for two years. According to their own statements, 78 percent of the 800 projects from the coalition agreement have already been completed or are being implemented. They now want to contribute ideas for the upcoming Vienna Urban Development Plan 2035.
Against cars for bikes
The NEOS want to create numerous so-called “Supergrätzl” in which the street space is freed from cars and made space for greenery, cyclists and pedestrians. In the opinion of NEOS, the quality of life in the Graezel will be massively increased.
In addition, there should be significantly more traffic-calmed zones. The ring is specifically named. The planned traffic calming in the inner city is to be continued.
A “Vienna quarter hour” is supposed to be the opposite of an “auto-focused city model”. This means that all everyday needs can be reached within a quarter of an hour on foot or by bike.
High-rise buildings once morest surface sealing
Living space should be created with as little surface sealing as possible. That means going up for NEOS. In order to get more acceptance for high-rise buildings, developers should be obliged to open the roof terraces for commercial offers or consumption-free zones. Under the motto “Green and blue instead of gray”, areas are also to be unsealed once more. Green areas and surface water should ensure quality of life and cooling in the Grätzel.
Party leader and deputy mayor Christoph Wiederkehr will also take stock of two years in the city government. According to their own statements, the education budget has been increased by 15%. Every compulsory school in Vienna now has an administrative specialist and there are a third more school social workers. In addition, the “School Nurses” project has been launched to improve health care in schools.
The NEOS are also committed to more transparency in the city. There is now a whistle blowing platform. A transparency report on the city’s expenditure and a compliance officer in the Vienna Parliament. And when it comes to economic issues, the NEOS see themselves as a driving force for the city government. The Sunday opening of the Viennese markets has come and trivial taxes, such as the air tax, have been abolished.
