FIFA announced its selection of Italian referee Daniele Orsato to lead the opening match of the 2022 FIFA World Cup between host Qatar and Ecuador on Sunday. Orsato was responsible for the Video Assistant Referee (VAR) technology at the last World Cup, and is described as “one of the most experienced referees in Europe”.

Qatar begins its participation in the World Cup by hosting the finals, which are also held for the first time in the Middle East, while Ecuador is in the finals for the fourth time.

The two teams fell into a first group that includes the Netherlands, the runner-up three times, and Senegal, the African champions, who received a painful slap with the injury of their star, Sadio Mane, the second best player in the world for 2022 and the best African player.
