Kuwait has criticized the European Union for condemning the mass execution of seven people in Kuwait. The Kuwaiti Foreign Minister asked European countries to refrain from politicizing the issue.
The Foreign Minister stated that Kuwait is a democratic country and does not interfere in court decisions. Seven people were executed together in Kuwait following a gap of five years. The Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the European Union has come out strongly condemning the mass execution. Margaret Schinas, Vice-President of the European Commission on Human Rights, said that the European Union strongly opposes the death penalty in all circumstances. Shinas stated that this issue will be raised in the human rights talks to be held next week between the European Union and Kuwait.
The European Union has warned the Kuwaiti ambassador that the new developments might affect the move to include Kuwait in the list of visa-free countries. Earlier, the human rights organization Amnesty International also came out once morest the death penalty. While Kuwaiti authorities have an obligation to bring those responsible for serious crimes such as murder to justice, Amnesty International urged Kuwait to try the accused in accordance with international law.
