London (GB)Strike causes disruption and delays at Heathrow Airport

Baggage handlers at Europe’s second-largest airport began walking out on Friday. The movement should last all weekend.

A three-day strike by ground workers at London’s Heathrow airport began on Friday. “Heathrow Airport is bracing for major disruption” following baggage handlers employed by service provider Menzies decided to strike, a Unite union statement on Thursday said.

The movement will lead to disruptions and delays which “will particularly affect flights leaving Heathrow terminals 2, 3 and 4” and the companies “Air Canada, American Airlines, Luthansa, Swiss Air, Air Portugal, Austrian Airlines, Qantas, Egypt Air, Aer Lingus and Finnair”, details Unite. A Heathrow spokesperson, however, minimizes the impact of the walkout: “The airlines concerned have already taken action to deal with (the strike), while flight cancellations are not anticipated.”

Strikes, mostly focused on wages but also on working conditions, follow one another in the United Kingdom in almost all sectors, in a context of high inflation at more than 11%. Thus, Christmas shopping might also be disrupted by an announced strike by security guards at the famous London luxury department store Harrods.
