Industry fares better than construction in Q3

The industry saw both production and revenue grow in the third quarter in Switzerland. The construction sector, on the other hand, suffered declines.

From July to September, production in the secondary sector increased by 3.4% year on year. Turnover soared by 7.6%, a surge which is explained for more than half by price increases, said Friday the Federal Office of Statistics (FSO). This momentum has continued since the first quarter of 2021.

In industry, production progressed in July (+0.1%), in August (+5.2%) and above all in September, climbing by 11.4%, to grow by 5.2% during the three months.

On the contrary, in construction, production fell by 6.5% in the third quarter. This indicator fell in specialized construction works (-5.7%), in building (-5.9%) but also in civil engineering (-13.7%).

Turnover increased in industry in July (+4.8%), as well as in August (+9.6%) and September (+14.8%), a jump 9.5% on the entire partial.

For construction as a whole, revenues fell slightly by 0.2% year on year. In detail, they rose by 0.4% in building and by 0.6% in specialized construction work, while they fell by 9.5% in civil engineering.
