This Thursday, in a meeting in which the ambassadors of both countries participated, they announced the results of the commercial relationship between Colombia and the Asian giant during the first half of this yearand some projections were made regarding the challenges and opportunities that appear with the presidency of Gustavo Petro.
For the Chinese ambassador in Colombia, Lan Hu, the relationship between the two nations “is at the best moment in its history” and generating great benefits for the country in terms of energy transition, ecological protection and infrastructure.
Likewise, It was highlighted that China represented 4.03% of Colombia’s total exports, positioning itself as the fourth favorite destination for national products and services behind the United States (25.7%), Panama (11.4%) and India (5.3%). Copper (44.46%), coffee (15.44%) and soybean oils and derivatives (11.45%) were the key products to reach these figures.
For his part, the Colombian ambassador to China (E), Sergio Cabrera, indicated that his purpose is to “continue strengthening relations between the two countries, leveraging culture, industry and production. Colombia must take advantage of the different advantages that China offers to achieve sustainable development”.
During the event, the figures for total imports from China during the first half of 2022 were also analyzed. According to DANE, these had an increase of 45.82% compared to the same period of the previous year, going from US $6,349,477 million to US $9,258,646 million.
Likewise, there was talk regarding the role that China is playing in the development of transportation megaprojects in Colombia, since Companies from this country will be in charge of building the first line of the Bogotá Metro, the Regiotram de Occidente —which will connect different municipalities in Cundinamarca— and the 80 Metro in Medellín.
