NATO called an emergency meeting for this Wednesday.
The Polish Foreign Ministry reported on Wednesday that a Russian-made missile landed in the eastern part of the country, killing two people.
The agency said Foreign Minister Zbigniew Rau called the Russian ambassador and “immediately demanded detailed explanations.”
The statements came shortly following Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy called the missile attack “a significant escalation” in his country’s war with Russia.
“At 15:40 (local time) in the town of Przewodów, in Hrubieszów, (…) a Russian-made missile fell, killing two citizens of the Republic of Poland,” said Lukasz Jasina, spokesman for the ministry in a statement. .
The statement did not specify the type of missile or where it was fired from.
Moments later, the President of Poland, Andrzej Duda, clarified in a speech that it is not known who launched the missile that caused the explosion, although he stressed that it was “probably produced in Russia.”
“We are working calmly and in a very calm way,” Duda said during a National Security Office speech in Warsaw, urging calm and assuring the country of the support of NATO allies.
Duda added that the United States is sending experts to investigate the scene and that the investigations will be a joint operation.
The president reiterated that Poland has raised the alert status of its military.

emergency meeting
Hours earlier, Polish media reported that shells hit a farm in the territory of NATO member Poland, around the same time that Russia launched its biggest wave of missile attacks on Ukrainian cities in more than a month.
NATO Secretary General Jens Stoltenberg will chair an emergency meeting of alliance ambassadors on Wednesday morning in Brussels to discuss “this tragic incident,” spokeswoman Oana Lungescu told CNN on Tuesday.
“There was an explosion in eastern Poland,” government spokesman Piotr Muller said during a brief press conference in Warsaw. And he added that there are teams of experts who are clarifying the situation and will work through the night to clarify the details of what he called a “serious situation.”
He also noted that the country is increasing the combat readiness of some units.
