DEWA’s Research and Development Center develops an innovative model for fog forecasting and monitoring

In an effort to improve the operational processes of energy production

Dubai United Arab Emirates: DEWA’s Research and Development Center has developed an innovative model to predict and monitor fog formation using satellites. The model will be integrated into the planning and operational processes for energy production at the authority, which will contribute to improving the management and planning of energy production in the Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum Solar Park, the largest solar energy complex in one location in the world. The advanced model also contributes to upgrading the operations of energy production from gas turbines at the Jebel Ali power generation and water desalination plant complex, the largest facility for energy production using natural gas in one location, with a capacity of 9,547 megawatts of electricity.

His Excellency Saeed Mohammed Al Tayer, Managing Director and CEO of DEWA, said: “In realization of the vision of His Highness Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Vice President and Prime Minister of the UAE and Ruler of Dubai, may God protect him, DEWA is investing in the latest technologies of the Fourth Industrial Revolution and its advanced infrastructure. To keep pace with the requirements of sustainable development, as the innovative model for forecasting and monitoring fog formation will contribute to upgrading the operational processes of energy production. The model will be integrated into the planning and operational processes for energy production in the Authority, in a way that contributes to supporting the Dubai Clean Energy Strategy 2050 and the Carbon Neutral Strategy 2050 for the Emirate of Dubai to provide 100% of the energy production capacity will come from clean energy sources by the year 2050. We are also working on developing plans to expand the electricity and water infrastructure to meet the growing demand according to the highest levels of quality, availability, reliability and efficiency.”

His Excellency added: “The researchers at the center are looking forward to benefiting from the high-resolution images that will be sent by the Authority’s nano-artificial satellite of the type (6U) “Dewa-Sat 2”, to improve the accuracy of monitoring fog prediction using the remote sensing application and the independent ground station at the Research and Development Center. capable of tracking and communicating with the Authority’s low-Earth orbit satellites at an altitude of 400-700 km.The Authority intends to launch “Dewa-Sat 2” in February 2023, as part of the Authority’s space program (Space D).The step comes within the framework of the work of the Research and Development Center within “Space D” program to develop a number of specialized uses for the electricity network and water networks, with the aim of improving planning for energy production and transmission operations.

In turn, Engineer Waleed bin Salman, Executive Vice President of Business Development and Excellence Sector at DEWA, said: “The positive environment provided by the authority contributes to motivating employees to be creative and innovative, so that they become active contributors to anticipating and shaping the future. The Research and Development Center plays an important role in Supporting the authority’s efforts to localize knowledge and the participation of the scientific community in specialized scientific research, which contributes to the development of the clean and renewable energy sector and improving the services provided by the authority to customers. The center includes 31 male and female researchers, including 24 PhD and master’s degree holders.
