District and Cabildo Zenú strengthen Traditional Ancestral Medicine in Cartagena

With a characterization and scheduling of 1,000 people in Afro-descendant and indigenous territories, and a day with a bioscanner that benefited 300 people, the agreement between the District, through the Social Emergency Plan – Pedro Romero and the Zenú de Membrillal Indigenous Council – CAIZEMin order to strengthen the care and practice of Traditional Ancestral Medicine (MAT), as health alternative in urban familiescorregimentales and islanders of Cartagena, in a situation of extreme poverty.

The PES-Pedro Romero, from its Health program to overcome extreme poverty, articulated with the Zenú Indigenous Council of Membrillal – CAIZEMadvance an agenda of actions in the territory to care for the Afro-descendant and indigenous population, through days of health promotion and disease prevention.

In accordance with Ronald Benavides, leader of the Health program, during the first phase, the population was characterized to know their health conditions and, from there, 300 people were selected, to whom the knowledgeable will teach them how, alternatively, to combat their diseases and how to eat healthy, following receiving complementary care through the bioscanner. “We highlight that the impact of this joint work between the District and CAIZEM has no precedent in the city. and it bets on benefiting Afro-descendants and indigenous people,” Benavides asserted.

“We are fulfilling this agreement with a special day, using the bioscanner, identifying the diseases that are attacking indigenous and Afro communities. With the differential focus of this initiative, CAIZEM is consolidated as a benchmark in ancestral health and with leadership capacity to identify these problems that can have a solution through comprehensive health care”, indicated the ancestral doctor Leovigildo Castillo Suárez.

These workshops on health promotion and disease prevention, within the framework of the Ancestral and Traditional Medicinein indigenous councils and community councils of Cartagena, are developed through spiritual harmonization ceremonies, from the thought, knowledge and ancestral autonomy of indigenous peoples; as well as the education of the healing properties of medicinal plants.

“Thanks to the day with the bioscanner, we have detected diseases that we did not know we had. We want these health days to continue to be held in our town hall to prevent them in time and guarantee health of this ethnic community,” said Aleida Flórez.
