Asked by Yann Barthès regarding her habits in New York, Charlotte Gainsbourg revealed that she saw it as an opportunity to be there alone: “That’s what I found there, I didn’t expect it but that’s what I found so it allowed me to do things, to not be afraid, to not not to look at me, not to judge me”, she said. In an interview for l’Express a few years ago, the singer explained the reasons for her departure for New York: “I came here shortly following the death of my sister Kate. I mightn’t stand Paris anymore, the air was becoming unbreathable… I needed to find myself, and take stock”, she confided. And to continue: “creation is a banal activity. Here, everyone writes, paints, sings or takes photos. Art is not a sacred thing, deserving special attention. Suddenly, I no longer have the same view of myself. I feel freer.”
