What consequences for Van Gogh’s Sunflowers painting vandalized by activists?

Earthquake in the art world! After scaling the Mona Lisa last May and the savage attack on a work by Daniel Buren in 2019, today it is one of Van Gogh’s most famous paintings that has just been the victim of vandalism. The famous Sunflowers of the Dutch master kept at the National Gallery in London was attacked by two young environmental activists. Armed with two cans of tomato soup, they did not hesitate to sprinkle the precious Sunflowers in front of a dumbfounded audience. Remember, this canvas is worth no less than 84 million dollars. They then stuck to the wall before proclaiming their ecological demands.

Fortunately, the work is intact, as it was protected by glass. Only the affected frame suffered a slight degradation. The painting was quickly put back in its place at the end of the followingnoon. This new stunt by the group Just Stop Oil, which had already targeted works of art in the past, is part of a series of actions that began in early October in the British capital. Accused of degradation for an amount of less than 5000 pounds, these individuals appeared in a London court on Saturday October 15, then were released, their trial being set for December 13.
