Windows 11 22H2 and command lines, Windows Terminal becomes the default application

In Windows 11, there are different options for typing command lines. We have the Command Prompt for example or PowerShell. These two solutions are now put in the background with Windows 11 22H2. Microsoft decides to highlight Windows Terminal.

Windows Terminal was launched in 2019 by Microsoft. This is an Open Source project. It took a year of work for the firm to make the decision to publish the very first version simply called Windows Terminal 1.0. After two years of waiting, a new step has been taken. Windows Terminal becomes the default application in Windows 11.

Its great asset is to support tabs. He can thus launch several command lines at the same time. The utility can also offer several PowerShell prompts for example or a command prompt and a PowerShell prompt.

Windows Terminal and its customization options

It also offers customization options to change the look of each tab. The creation of profiles is possible. By default we have the Windows PowerShell and Command Prompt profiles. Several other features are available such as a command palette (CTRL-Shift-P) and the creation of actions to simplify certain manipulations.

Finally, if you don’t like this change, it is possible to go back. Microsoft added an option to restore the old configuration. To find it you have to go to this address

Paramètres (WIN+I) > Confidentialité et sécurité > Espace développeurs.

The option is located in the list proposed in the Terminal Zone. You have three options

  • Let Windows decide ( Terminal under Windows 11 22H2).
  • Windows Console Host – Opens a window dedicated to the selected command prompt interface, for example, a PowerShell window when launching PowerShell.
  • Windows Terminal – Same as “Let Windows Decide”. Opens Windows Terminal whenever a Command Prompt window is launched.
