By the end of the year, Universal+ and Paramount+ will be entering France. Enough to largely compete with current French streaming offers.
Netflix, Amazon Prime Video, Disney+, or even Apple TV… Many video-on-demand platforms have established themselves in France. However, the list is not complete. It will even continue to lengthen with the arrival at the end of 2022 of Universal +. Currently available in the United States, Latin America and India, the platform continues to expand worldwide and will cross the Atlantic to conquer the European market.
Competition between platforms is booming
If for the moment only Spain benefits from the catalog of Universal +, French subscribers, but also Germans, can hope to discover the programming of the new streaming service, in a few months. In any case, this was announced by the American media group NBCUniversal, without however specifying the exact date of the launch in France.
To hope to seduce the European market, Universal + is betting everything on its channels like Syfy, 13ème Rue et E!as well as on his fetish program, Dreamworks. From the studios to whom we owe Shrek (2001), Madagascar (2005), or even Dragons (2010), this channel will be available for the first time in France, both linearly and non-linearly, on demand.
This unprecedented offer for France should attract several subscribers, but above all compete with the animated cinema offered in particular on Disney+. After choosing to release most of their creations directly to streamingthe production company headed by Bob Chapek will therefore have to rub shoulders with Dreamworks know-how.
The competition from the platforms does not stop there, since Universal+ will land in France, almost at the same time as Paramount+. This new streaming offer offered by Canal+ is expected on December 1, 2022 on our territory, following a European launch in June, particularly in the United Kingdom. To hope to stand out, the platform will offer iconic channels like Nickelodeon, Showtime et Comedy Centralalongside new content like Star Trek : Strange New Worldthe series with Sylvester Stallone, Tulsa Kingas well as French-language proposals.
Finally, these launches were announced, while Netflix has just formalized its new flat-rate strategy. A service priced at €5.99, including 4 to 5 minutes of targeted per hour of viewing, and called “Essential with archyde news”. Regulations still unclear, while Amazon Prime Video and Disney + have increased their prices. The platform wars have only just begun.
