North Korea issues ‘serious warning’ to Seoul by firing artillery shells

The tension rises a notch between Pyongyang and Seoul. North Korea fired artillery shells off its east and west coasts late Tuesday, Oct. 8, 2022, the South Korean military said.

North Korea fired some 100 shells into the sea off its west coast, and 150 more off its east coast, South Korea’s military chiefs said in a statement on Wednesday.

Pyongyang later explained that it fired in order to send a “serious warning” in Seoul following South Korea fired dozens of artillery shells on Tuesday as part of its annual military exercises.

“The enemies should immediately cease their thoughtless provocations which are heightening military tension in the border area”estimated the North Korean staff in a press release.

The South Korean military drills, which are due to end on Saturday, come as Seoul recently led joint exercises with Japan and the United States.
