The Freebox Revolution player yesterday received a new update bringing a lot of improvements but the most conspicuous concerns the facilitation of the management of the energy it consumes.
If you haven’t updated your player yet, it’s time to do so. Free has rolled out the new version 1.3.29 of the decoder firmware for Freebox Revolution subscribers, which notably includes a new menu dedicated to energy savings. Accessible directly from the interface, it allows you to simply perform several manipulations aimed at reducing player consumption. Here is what you now have access to.
The menu is on the first line directly in the settings section of your Freebox, in order to be more easily found.
By clicking on it, you will then be entitled to many possible manipulations to limit the consumption of your player. If you don’t want to complicate your life, you can simply activate the “Energy saving” mode, which will lower the time of inactivity before going to sleep, deep as well as light. This is the manipulation directly recommended by Free, but you can also configure yourself the different rules that you want to impose on your player.
Each manipulation is described so that you are certain of your choice. So you can adjust the time following which your device goes into light sleep (from 30 minutes) or deep sleep (from 4 hours). Note, the operator indicates that if deep standby is activated, it will take regarding 40 seconds for your Freebox to wake up. In order to prevent your USB key connected to the player from continuing to consume electricity, you can choose to deactivate them when your device goes into light standby or not. It is also possible to ensure that a long press on the stop button on your remote control plunges your decoder into deep standby.
Other manipulations may concern HDMI-CEC, an important technology if ever there was one since it allows your player to control your television or sound bar connected to it directly. You can thus choose to activate it or not, to allow HDMI devices to be put on standby from the Freebox Player or vice versa. Navigation with the remote control of other HDMI devices can also be enabled as well as volume control. Finally, if you wish, you can access the list of equipment concerned using the last line of this menu.
The latest player update also introduced a shorter restart delay, ie 5 to 10 seconds less to arrive on the home screen. Faced with the current crisis, operators are now obliged to put in place processes to facilitate the standby of decoders but also of the servers offered in their fixed offers. For now, deep standby is only offered on TV equipment.
