A military plane crashed in a residential area in the town of Yeisk, southern Russia, killing at least four people and injuring 25 others.
An apartment building caught fire and emergency services were called to the scene.
The Russian Defense Ministry said a SU-34 was on a training flight when one of its engines caught fire.
The pilots had parachuted before the collision, the ministry said.
The statement quoted one of the pilots as saying that the cause of the crash was a fire in one of the engines during take-off, and the plane’s fuel caught fire in the yard of a residential building, where the plane crashed.
The governor of the Krasnodar region, where the town of Yesk is located, said in a Russian-language Telegram post that firefighters in the region were battling the flames.
According to local media reports, the fire surrounded five floors of the building and damaged a number of apartments.
The Kremlin has instructed local and national authorities to provide all necessary aid to those affected by the fire, TASS reported.
The Russian authorities said they had opened a criminal investigation file and sent investigators to the site, Archyde.com news agency reported.
Yeisk is located opposite the area occupied by Russian forces in southern Ukraine, separated from it by the Sea of Azov.
