Konami ventures to invest in NFTs and the metaverse

Konami has announced its new goal of providing new experiences in the web3 and the metaverse. The Japanese company would like to launch a service that highlights the trading of NFTs (non-fungible tokens) inside video games. Despite the uncertainty surrounding web3, the company seems determined to invest fully in this project.

The video game publisher reorients its activities

Konami is less and less active in the production of video games. Game consoles, like PCs, find themselves neglected in favor of a strategy that he is not regarding to abandon. Indeed, the creator of Castlevaniaof Silent Hill and of Metal Gear Solid, rushes to the web3. When it comes to NFTthe firm’s competitors tend to drown in controversy following their failures, like Ubisoft. Konami, meanwhile, is one of the best-placed publishers in this universe. Just the first sale of the Castlevania NFTs earned him around $160,000 at the start of 2022. This profit has surely motivated him to persevere in this sector.

A risky bet for the Japanese firm?

Konami would like to set up a platform on which to distribute NFTs in several of the games already on the market. He says he intends to mobilize ” a wide range of talent in system building and service development “. According to official website of the firm13 positions are currently available to develop services adapted to web3 and metaverse.

However, this project represents a huge risk. In the month of September, the trading volume of non-fungible tokens increased collapsed 97% from January. While the majority seem to be fleeing the sector, Konami is running in the opposite direction. This is a more than perilous bet. On the one hand, a rebound in the sector would make it possible to make a profit. On the other hand, the future of NFTs remains hazy and Konami risks losing everything it has invested in the web3.
