Manchester City manager Pep Guardiola said that members of the Liverpool fans threw coins at him during the match that saw his team’s 1-0 Premier League defeat at Anfield on Sunday.
Guardiola said things were thrown in his direction following the VAR disallowed Phil Foden’s goal in the match that ended City’s unbeaten run since the start of the season.
“He tried to rally but they didn’t touch me. Maybe next time they will be better,” Guardiola told the BBC.
Meanwhile, Liverpool FC condemned the “lewd” chants chanted by some fans at the match.
“We are very disappointed to hear obscenities related to the football stadium tragedies during today’s match at Anfield. The foyer in the far section has also been vandalized with graphics of a similar nature,” the club said in a statement.
“We know the impact of such behavior on families, survivors, and everyone associated with these disasters,” he added.
“We are working with the relevant authorities and will also work with Manchester City, in order to do everything we can to ensure that this chanting is completely removed from football.”
Liverpool also opened an investigation into the coin tossing.
A club spokesman said: “We are aware of an incident of throwing objects in the technical area for today’s match. This is completely unacceptable behavior and does not comply with the standards of behavior we expect at Anfield.”
“This incident will be fully investigated using CCTV and those found guilty will be punished, including a life ban from attending matches at Anfield and a possible football ban order,” the spokesman added.
Merseyside Police said it was “working closely” with both clubs to investigate the incidents at Anfield.
“We learned of aggressive behavior during the Liverpool-Manchester City match, and offensive graffiti was sprayed in the far (field) section,” a police statement said.
“Such behavior will not be tolerated, and we are working with both clubs to identify and bring to justice anyone found responsible for offensive behaviour.”
target cancellation
Guardiola was furious that Foden’s second-half goal – which would have put his side ahead – was overturned by the VAR due to Erling Haaland’s foul on Fabinho.
Commenting on the coin tossing, Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp said: “Oh, horrible. I’m sorry. I apologize for that. I had no idea it was. It should never, ever happen.”
Liverpool got the three points following Mohamed Salah beat City goalkeeper Ederson, with a perfect shot 14 minutes before the end of the match.
“We played a really good game, but this is a game with really good margins and mistakes are punishable,” Guardiola said.
“We made a mistake and mightn’t admit it and that’s why we lost the match.”
“We played to win once morest Liverpool today, of course we played for that. After the 1-0 defeat, the fans shouted but we screamed more on the pitch.”
“The referee wanted the game to continue, and the game continued, and the game continued, there were a thousand million errors like this, and this error appeared because we scored a goal. So they canceled because we scored a goal, otherwise it wouldn’t have been cancelled.”
