At the annual “March for Life”, counter-demonstrators also organized a disruptive action. A total of 30 people were arrested and 48 reported.
VIENNA. As every year, the March for Life took place on Saturday, October 15th. The demonstrators are showing their displeasure with euthanasia and abortion. Among them were Christian fundamentalists, such as this time ÖVP politician Bishop Klaus Küng and some identitarians.
The demonstration started at 1 p.m. at Karlsplatz, moved to Heldenplatz, where an interim rally took place, and ended at 4 p.m. at Heldenplatz. At the same time, a counter-demonstration took place that blocked the march for life. According to the first reports on Saturday, some counter-demonstrators were surrounded by the police. In the course of this, there are said to have been clashes between officials and the protesters.
The ring has been blocked
According to the official police broadcast, the counter-demonstrators threw pyrotechnics at the officers. The protection area for the “March for Life” is said not to have been complied with either. As a result, identity checks had to be carried out and the counter-demonstration was broken up.
But according to officials, the people who were protesting once morest the “March for Life” gathered once more at 4 p.m. at Karlsplatz and blocked the ring timetable. This was also broken up by the police.
There are individual recordings on social media showing officials chasing demonstrators in the ring. In total, the police carried out 30 administrative arrests, 24 identity checks and 48 reports under the Assembly Act.
