【Reporter Lin Mingyou/Changhua Report】October 20th is World Osteoporosis Day every year. Erlin Christian Hospital is holding a World Osteoporosis Day response activity in the lobby on the first floor this morning (13th) “Love your family, you need to love yourself regularly. “Prevention of Osteoporosis” health promotion, arranged for Dr. Wang Weide, director of the Department of Rehabilitation Medicine, to arrange a 10-minute elementary school “Silent Killer of Silver-haired People ~ Osteoporosis Big Matter”, muscle strength testing, functional assessment of the elderly, osteoporosis health education, etc., as well as Nice little gift.
Wang Weide said that the 85-year-old Mr. Hong fell down the stairs and was undergoing rehabilitation treatment for hip fracture. Mr. Hong accepted his daughter’s suggestion to arrange a customized health check for his father at the health check center of the hospital following being discharged from the hospital. Hyperglycemia, hyperlipidemia and mild liver cirrhosis were found by liver ultrasound. In addition to osteoporosis and fractures, Mr. Hong has no choice but to exercise every day, and there is no relevant genetic history in his family.
Wang Weide pointed out that if Mr. Hong did not come for the health check, when would these diseases be discovered? Is it too late once more when the body starts to send the alarm? Osteoporosis is a silent killer of bones. Osteoporosis has almost no symptoms. It is only when a fall causes a fracture that you know that you have osteoporosis.
Wang Weide said that for further evaluation and treatment of osteoporosis in men, the most beneficial drugs are used to improve bone quality and reduce continuous bone loss, in order to reduce the incidence of fractures and maintain the quality of life of elderly men.
Wang Weide pointed out that according to statistics, following hip fractures in the elderly, regarding 5% to 30% of the patients died within one year, and men were 2 to 3 times as many as women. Up to 30% of patients can recover to the mobility before fracture, and more than 60% of patients may have to rely on walkers (crutches, wheelchairs, etc.) throughout their lives, or even be unable to stand or move at all, and need to rely on others to take care of them throughout their lives.
So how to prevent osteoporosis? Wang Weide pointed out that 1000-1500 mg of calcium and 400-800 international units of vitamin D should be added every day; regular weight-bearing exercise can make bones and muscles resist gravitational exercise, which can effectively increase bone density, reduce bone loss, and strengthen cardiopulmonary function. It can improve the reaction speed, increase flexibility and muscle strength, increase joint mobility and balance, thereby preventing falls, reducing the incidence of fractures, and avoiding alcoholism, smoking or long-term use of drugs that may cause bone calcium loss.
Wang Weide said that, in addition to the free “adult health check” and “four cancer screening” programs that the National Health Administration regulates the age, you can also come to the Erlin Christian Hospital Health Management Center to consult your health status. “Health” is in your own hands, and you and your family, who are busy and work hard, need to slow down and check your physical condition. Don’t forget to treat and invest in your health. Come and have a health check. (Video: https://youtu.be/-H5-cFI1yxo)
