There was no safety manager on the roof… ‘Songdo 30th floor tragedy’ that could not be stopped

◀ anchor ▶

A few days ago, I reported the accident of a young man in his 30s who fell and died while cleaning the exterior windows in a high-rise apartment in Songdo, Incheon.

It was confirmed that there was no safety manager who should have been placed on the roof even though the work was carried out in bad weather and an unexpected situation occurred during the work.

Reporter Yoo Seo-young covered the story.

“If it wears out, you can’t use it next time, so these plastic materials or metal materials…”

Wearing safety equipment such as a helmet and lifeline is mandatory.

Weather conditions such as rain and wind are also important.

“When it rains, it’s almost impossible for our rope workers (rope workers) to work. It’s dangerous, wet and slippery, and we have to walk on railings like this…”

After the safety check, work begins.

“I’m going down now. This is the most frightening moment. I shake it like this once. It doesn’t go down any further…”

This is the site where high-rise rope work is being done.

While the work is being done, guidelines are in place to place safety managers on the roof and on the ground, respectively.

However, four days ago, there was no manager on the roof of the Songdo site in Incheon, where a young man in his 30s died.

As water was cleaned in two apartment buildings, there were two people on the roof and two people on the ground.

“There was only one safety (management agent) downstairs. It had to be on top and there was also a bottom, so a total of four people had to come in, but only one…”

The aluminum railing on the roof of the apartment where the accident occurred was in a state where the corners were sharper because of the phenomenon that it collapsed during work.

There was a significant variable that might weaken the work rope, but no one was checking the situation.

While the reason why the auxiliary safety belt worn by the victim did not work properly is also questionable, the police are continuing the investigation.

“It’s a rope with its own life at stake, but isn’t it a problem for us with that kind of protective equipment…”

On the day of the accident, a strong wind advisory was issued in Incheon and it even rained.

Even if it did not meet the criteria for stopping work, there were many reasons to adhere to safety rules.
