Former US President Donald Trump denounced, Thursday, the issuance of a subpoena by a House Committee investigating the attack by a crowd of his supporters on the Capitol in January 2021, and questioned why he was not summoned to testify before it earlier.
“Why didn’t the unelected committee ask me to testify months ago?” Trump said on his account on the “Truth Social” social network.
He added, “Why did they wait until the end, until the last moments of their last meeting?” And he added, “Because the committee is a complete ‘failure’ and has only worked to further divide our country.”
Trump’s reaction came following the committee voted unanimously to summon the former president to appear before it.
“This committee will demand full accountability for any American person for the events of January 6. For this reason, it is our duty to listen to the testimony of Donald Trump,” said committee chair Penny Thompson.
Trump “is the focus of what happened on January 6th. So we want to hear from him,” Thompson told a public hearing.
“He should be held accountable. He should be held accountable for his actions,” he added.
But for the committee, it’s also regarding “doing everything in its power to tell the most complete story and make recommendations to help ensure that what happened on January 6 does not happen once more.”
The task of the committee, made up of seven Democrats and two Republicans, is to highlight the president’s behavior before, during, and following the attack on the Capitol that shocked the world.
