Census: Nearly 40% of the population has a migration background
Data from the Federal Statistical Office show that the proportion of people of foreign origin has increased slightly in Switzerland.
In 2021, 39% of the permanent resident population aged 15 or over in Switzerland came from migration. This represents 2,890,000 people. Compared to 2020, this population was up by one percentage point, the Federal Statistical Office (FSO) revealed on Thursday. This is more than between 2019 and 2020 where the increase was only 0.3 points.
Among this population resulting from migration, “nearly 80% of people were born abroad and belong to the first generation (2,276,000 people). The remaining 20% were born in Switzerland and therefore belong to the 2nd generation (615,000 people)”, specifies the FSO.
As for the nationalities of people with a migration background, the OFS notes that in 2021 “following Swiss nationality (38%), the most represented are Italian (10%) and German (9%) nationalities”. Next come people from Portugal, France, Kosovo, Spain, Serbia, Turkey and North Macedonia (see graph below).
