Asbestos found in old warehouse at Sandy Beach wharf

This warehouse was demolished as part of the development of an outdoor storage area for goods and a reception area for international cruises.

But its demolition was delayed to ensure that the building, which served during the Second World War, was first decontaminated.

When we started the work, despite having made characterizations of the building, we had to deal with the fact that this building, which was a former National Defense building, had a lot more asbestos than expected.says Anne Dupéré, general manager of the Port Company of Bas-Saint-Laurent and Gaspésie.

Despite the three-week delay caused by the decontamination of the building, Anne Dupéré ensures that the drainage and surfacing of the land should therefore be completed on time, at the end of November.

We made up for it in other places, so things are still going very well in terms of the schedule.she explains

The additional costs will be diluted in the total envelope of the project.

In 2015, Transport Canada had decontaminated Gaspé Bay near the Sandy Beach industrial wharfwhich had been used for military purposes during the Second World War.
