In addition to the threat from Russia, Austria, with a population of regarding 9 million, has faced political turmoil several times in recent years.

Austria is a parliamentary republic with the prime minister holding real power. However, the president is the commander-in-chief of the armed forces, can appoint the prime minister, and has the power to dissolve the cabinet and parliament.

After counting 95 per cent of the votes at the polls, pollster SORA predicted Van der Bellen with 56.1 per cent, with the closest opponent, Walter Rosenkrantz, of the Liberal Party, at just under 18 per cent.
